Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a military coup in last fall and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of his move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
